British 1953 Ariel
“This stunning British 1953 Ariel will be among the motorcycles on display at the Volland Store, October 12-13. This is the gallery’s fourth year of celebrating vintage motorcycles with a selection of bikes plus food and music.”
This 1953 Ariel KHA twin, owned by Dale Keesecker of Washington, KS., is one of 450 built. An even smaller number were painted Coronation Blue to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth on June, 1953. This bike was awarded Best in Show at the Heart of American Motorcycle Enthusiasts’ 22nd Annual Vintage Motorcycle Show in 2013.

Four scenic routes have been tested by Hal Jones, who has (probably) been on every backroad in the Flint Hills – and across the nation – accompanied by his lovely wife Vicky, who writes about their adventures in her newspaper column

Trip I
110 miles round trip from Volland
From Volland, go northeast on K-10 to Alma
North on Hwy 99 1 ½ miles
Take right turn to McFarland
Go north to I-70
Go east 2 miles
Exit for Paxico
Go north out of Paxico to Hwy 24
Go east 4 miles to Hwy 63
Go north 10 miles to Aiken Switch Road (has brown Historic Stone Arch Bridge sign on right side of Hw 63 telling you to go left)
Go west to Onaga Road
Take left to go South to Hwy 24
Turn right – go to Wamego
Go south (left at light) on Hwy 99 to Alma. Take K-10 to Volland
Trip II
155 miles roundtrip from VollandFrom Volland, go north on Old K-10 to Alma
North on K-99 through Wamego to Blaine (huge historic Catholic Church)
Take right on Hwy 16 to Hwy 63
Go south on Hwy 63 to St. Mary’s
Go east on Hwy 24 to Maple Hill Road
Go south to Maple Hill
Follow main road on south end of Maple Hill down to I-70
Go 1 mile EAST on I-70. Take first exit
Go south on Keene Road to stop sign
Go right on K-4 to Eskridge
Go right on K-99 (10 miles to stop sign)
Go north on K-99 to Alma
Take K-10 back to Volland
Trip III
70 miles roundtrip from Volland
From Volland, take K-10 north to Alma
Go north on K-99 to K-18 (Zeandale Road)
Go west to Hwy 177
Go south on Hwy 177 to K-4
Go 1 mile east and go north through Alta Vista
Take K-10 to Volland

From Volland, go south on K-10 through Alta Vista to K-4
Turn right. Go west 1 mile
Turn left, go south on Hwy 177 to Council Grove
Go EAST on Hwy 56 to Hwy 99
Go north on Hwy 99 to Eskridge
Stay on 99 to Alma
Take K-10 southwest to Volland
