Reflecting on the Ruin within the prairie context, it’s easy to see why we’ve all become so enchanted with its revival. The prairie and its people are resilient. Prairie burns wipe away dormant grass, launching opportunities for growth and safeguarding diversity in a spectacular showing.
The Ruin will do the same for culture in the Flint Hills. Although much of Otto Kratzer’s house was lost in a 1929 fire, the Ruin retains the memory and feel of the Kratzers’ home. Rebuilt porches capture the same vistas and breezes that Otto, Mabel, and their two sons enjoyed. Revived steps give a sense of how the home worked, and The Ruin’s intimate pit serves as one large living room, where everyone can feel at home.
We’ve already received many exciting proposals for The Ruin, and we look forward to realizing what the new old house offers. We hope you share our enthusiasm for The Ruin and the opportunities it will bring to the Flint Hills. As we venture into new programming at The Ruin, The Volland Foundation sees The Ruin as a new place for community gathering and building, and for serving Wabaunsee County, the Flint Hills and beyond. Your participation will be affirming in this new effort.
To launch The Ruin, we sought a production steeped with local pride. We found just that in Heart/Roots: Wabaunsee County. The careful and thoughtful weaving of Wabaunsee County-sourced stories by Mary Pinard produced a truly unique script. Pinard’s colleague at Babson College, Beth Wynstra, cast and is directing actors from the Flint Hills. Heart/Roots spans time, place, and circumstance, providing a new way to learn about, and celebrate, Wabaunsee County. Such an effort could not have been achieved without community support, from the storytellers, actors, advisors, and builders. We now invite you to become a part of that effort. Your generosity will be forever tied to The Ruin and the new possibilities it fosters.
We look forward to seeing you in June at “The Ruin”
