You wouldn’t have guessed that Linda Blackburn hadn’t visited the Kansas Flint Hills before this exhibition.
Her Law of the Saddle (II) landscapes and interiors are right at home in the tall grass prairie, home of many tales of the great American West. But beyond the traditional and universal themes in the Western movie genre (frontier and personal justice, honor codes and social order in the courtroom or barroom) the viewer finds that the real theater here is in her brushstrokes, her color palette, and her compositions. More often than not, a subtle sense of humor permeates her scenes, even when high drama is what is supposed to be taking place. She consistently plays with scale and gesture, imbuing everything (even her rocks and mesas) with a certain stance that becomes a central part of the dialogue.
