Art and Community are essential elements of The Volland Foundation.
The Volland Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit, owns and operates The Volland Store and various other sites in the historic town of Volland, Kansas. The foundation seeks to present events that nourish the human spirit and provide enjoyment, and create a place for gathering and exchanging ideas. The Volland Foundation offers a residency program, providing and time and space for artists, scientists, writers, poets, musicians, designers, and historians to experience the tallgrass prairie and engage in the culture of our rural community.
The Volland Store
Otto Kratzer was an original Storekeeper of Kratzer Bros. Mercantile from 1913 to1971. Through his infectious personality and delight in introducing new ideas to his neighbors, he made the Store the cultural and social center of the surrounding community. The Store closed upon his death.
Since its reopening in 2015, The Volland Store has become an inviting and comfortable place to gather, experience new ideas, greet old friends and make new ones. Art exhibitions, music concerts, poetry readings, book signings, talks by scientists, authors, and a Vaquero Equestrian Show have contributed to a lively and entertaining scene in the little town of Volland. The refurbished “Ruin” is an outdoor performance venue for music and theatre, and a History, Nature, and Sculpture Trail is open every day dawn to dusk.
In 2021 The Volland Store was donated by its owners to The Volland Foundation.
We invite you to become a Friend of Volland, helping to ensure that the foundation’s mission endures into the future.
