Your generosity will help build an artist studio for our artist residency program. It will provide a place for workshops and community-related art programs when a residency is not in session.
The entire volume of the original house will be used for the studio, allowing for natural light and adequate space for working. A lean-to addition will provide an ADA-compliant entrance and bathroom, plus additional space for facilitating art activities. The exterior of the building will be kept as original as possible. Renovating an existing building will maintain the historical character of Volland and keep it within the “campus” of the artist residences.

A purpose-built painting studio is pivotal to the Volland Residency Program, which awards artists from across the country the gift of time and space in the endangered tallgrass prairie of the Kansas Flint Hills. For more information about our artist residency program, click here.

This is our first Match Day, and we couldn’t be more excited.
The Volland Foundation has been selected as one of 28 organizations to participate in the ECF Match Day. It is an extraordinary opportunity to make your support of The Volland Foundation go further. Your generosity will enable us to receive matching funds that will be used for building an artist studio for our artist residency program.
We are deeply impressed with the work the Emporia Community Foundation is doing to support nonprofits in our region. We are hopeful that our participation in Match Day will introduce us to new supporters and stakeholders, engendering an even wider “fan base” in the Flint Hills.
The Volland Foundation will use Match Day funds to transform an existing small residence in Volland into an artist studio.
Your donation on ECF Match Day to The Volland Foundation will help build it!

The Volland Store opened in 1913 in the little railroad community of Volland and quickly became the social and cultural center of the ranching community that surrounded it. The former general store has been re-purposed as an art gallery and serves once more as a gathering place for the community both near and far. Located in a scenic valley in the Flint Hills, the Store is an award-winning space with good art and friendly conversation. The Volland Store is owned and operated by the Volland Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit, and serves as an anchor for the Foundation’s activities in Volland: art exhibitions and community programming in the gallery; outdoor performances at “the Ruin;” artist residencies in Volland; guest accommodations in the Loft and the Little House for the general public; and the History, Nature, and Sculpture Trail, open throughout the year from dawn to dusk.
