Special Invitation
Friday, July 7th at Volland | 7 pm
Free admission. Open to all-
Charro Jerry Diaz & Family will hold an open house at Volland
Meet the Diaz Family and their Andalusian horses!
Since Volland first brought the Charro Jerry Diaz Family to Wabaunsee County in 2019 their return has been asked about incessantly. Volland is pleased to bring the Charro Jerry Diaz Family back in 2023 and to add to the event an equally impressive flamenco concert from Ensemble Iberica. In the gallery, Guggenheim Fellow Philip Heying displays Country|Citizens, a contemplative and graceful approach to photographing the Flint Hills.
Come to Volland before the horse show for food trucks and live mariachi music. This part of the evening will run from 5:30-7. Inside the gallery our exhibit, Country|Citizens by Guggenheim Fellow Philip Heying, will be on view, and the History, Nature, and Sculpture Trail will be open for your enjoyment. Volland will offer a cash bar by donation throughout the evening.
The Charro Jerry Diaz Family comes from a long line of horsemen and horse breeders. Based in New Braunfels, Texas, the Charro Jerry Diaz Family share their riding skills internationally. Their expertise in breeding is well known and respected. Charro Jerry Diaz, a fourth-generation Mexican Charro, will be displaying that history in his performance. Staci Diaz, a third-generation rider, will present the traditional Spanish equestrian style in her performance, dressed in traditional attire. Finally, Staci’s and Jerry’s son Nicolas, a world champion rider, will dress and ride in the Portuguese tradition. Dawn and Geff Dawson, well-known local horsemen and entertainers, will emcee the performance.
Ensemble Iberica will perform in the Ruin after the horse show. Grab your lawn chairs and head down to the Ruin to find a good seat in view of the flamenco concert.
Beau Bledsoe (guitar), John Currey (percussion), and Rich Wheeler (saxophone) will perform flamenco music as Melinda Hedgecorth dances. Also featured will be vocalist Mireya Ramos, Latin Grammy Award winner, accompanied by Bledsoe and Currey.
Ensemble Iberica appeared at Carnegie Hall in May 2023, in celebration of their 10th anniversary, a testament to their excellence in creating quality music and providing innovative opportunities for audiences and artists alike. The group’s captivating performances seamlessly blend the distinct cultural elements of Spain, Latin America, Portugal, and beyond and transport audiences to the heart of the Iberian diaspora.
The flamenco has its roots in Roma history. The group moved from current-day Northern India and eventually landed in Southern Spain. There the Romas were introduced to other influences, like the Moors. These influences led to flamenco dancing and music. The romance of the music and dance will be enhanced by a summer evening under the stars.
We hope you join us on July 8th for this unique and most wonderful event!
