Kratzer Panel Discussion

June 27, 2015

The Wabaunsee County Historical Society will host a panel discussion related to the exhibition, “In Focus: The Photography and Film of Otto Kratzer.” Dr. Virgil Dean will moderate the discussion with panelists Dr. Jim Hoy, Dr. Joyce Thierer, and Project Director, Greg Hoots. They will talk about the evolution of the town of Volland, including the role of the railroad and the cattle industry. The Gallery at The Volland Store will be open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The Nature Conservancy

Nicolas Lucas, head of the The Nature Conservancy program in Patagonia, updated Kansas trustees on activities in Argentina. The Nature Conservancy of Kansas has participated in the acquisition of Fortin Chacabuco, a ranch near Bariloche, Argentina, that will be used to demonstrate sustainable grazing practices in the area. Nicolas was a presenter later in the day at Symphony in the Flint Hills.

Fifth Annual Kansas Cowboy Poetry Contest

Contestants in the Fifth Annual Kansas Cowboy Poetry Contest will compete in two categories: Serious and Humorous poetry. All works are original. Awards and winners’ performances at 9 pm. Winners will receive the coveted Governor’s Buckle. This event takes place in conjunction with Symphony in the Flint Hills, celebrating its Tenth Anniversary this year.

The Photography and Film of Otto Kratzer

June 7 – September 7, 2015

Otto photographed daily life in Volland, Kansas, with humor, style, and evident affection for its residents. Over seven decades he amassed a portfolio of images numbering in the thousands, and this exhibit presents thirty-four of the best. All are created from the original negatives, and as a group, they define his work.

Volland Store Grand Opening

Celebrate with us! The Volland Store re-opens following a major renovation. Featuring Wabaunsee County Historical Society exhibition “In Focus: The Photography and Film of Otto Kratzer” and the new documentary, “Volland Memories: The Kratzer Films.” Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the afternoon. There will be music, refreshments, and homemade ice cream.
