Meaningful architecture can happen anywhere.
A case in point: a project that is seemingly simple – a refurbished kit house in a very small Kansas town is recognized for design excellence at a national level and celebrated amongst a pool of amazing architects across the United States.
El Dorado Architects, in collaboration with Design+Make at Kansas State University and College of Architecture, Planning & Design at Kansas State University was honored with an American Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum for Volland House #1, Honorable Mention.
In the words of the Chicago Athenaeum:
The American Architecture Awards are dedicated to the recognition of excellence in architecture and urbanism in the United States. The program awards and pays tribute to new developments in design and underscores the directions and understanding of current cutting-edge processes consistent with today’s design thinking.
In October 2022, a jury of independent Italian architects, educators, and planners convened remotely to select the winners of the 2022 American Architecture Awards. The five-member jury selected over 150 buildings from a shortlist of over 400 for the best new architecture designed and constructed by American architects and international architects with offices in the United States.
The selected submissions demonstrate design achievement, including a sense of place, purpose, history, and environmental sustainability. “This year’s winning projects are also characterized as exuding urban generosity, a sense of dignity, and timelessness—the absolute paramount definition of Good Design.”
The Volland Foundation was delighted to work with the K-State architecture students and is honored by this prestigious award. Sincere gratitude is extended to the students of the Design+Make studio, their professor David Dowell of El Dorado Architects, Don Hendricks, general contractor, and George Terbovich of George Terbovich Design for their fine collaboration on this outstanding project.
