SANDRA BEASLEY is coming to Kansas to serve as a Writer-in-Residence at Wichita State University during most of February 2018. During her residency at Wichita State she will travel to Volland to experience the Flint Hills. On Saturday, February 17, Sandra will participate in a poetry reading at The Volland Store with her friend and colleague, Traci Brimhall, a published poet and Assistant Professor at Kansas State University.
Ms. Beasley is the author of four books: three poetry collections and Don’t Kill the Birthday Girl: Tales from an Allergic Life, a memoir and cultural history of food allergies. Her nonfiction has been featured in The New York Times and the Washington Post. Recognition for Ms. Beasley’s work includes an NEA Fellowship, the Barnard Women Poets Prize, and inclusion in many anthologies including The Best American Poetry. She has served as a visiting writer at Lenoir-Rhyne University in North Carolina, Cornell College in Iowa, and the University of Mississippi. She holds an MFA in creative writing from The American University, and she is on faculty for the University of Tampa’s low-residency MFA program. She lives in Washington, D.C.
TRACI BRIMHALL is the author of three collections of poetry: Saudade (Copper Canyon Press); Our Lady of the Ruins (W.W. Norton), winner of the Barnard Women Poets Prize; and Rookery (Southern Illinois University Press), winner of the Crab Orchard Series in Poetry First Book Award; as well as an illustrated children’s book, Sophia & The Boy Who Fell. Her poems have appeared in The New Yorker, Poetry, The Believer, The New Republic, Orion, and Best American Poetry 2013 & 2014. She’s received fellowships from the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing and the National Endowment for the Arts. Currently, she’s an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at Kansas State University and lives in Manhattan, KS.
